Interim management as a profession

Interim management is a profession that has grown in popularity in recent years. This is due to several factors, including increased demand for temporary leadership positions and greater awareness of the benefits of using an interim manager.

An interim manager is an experienced leader who is engaged on a temporary basis to handle a range of leadership challenges, such as leading an organisational change, covering for a departing leader or handling a special project. Interim managers are often known for being experienced, professional leaders with broad expertise and experience. They are also known for being flexible and adaptable and for being able to handle different types of challenges. They are often somewhat overqualified, so that they can deliver value from day one.

There are several benefits to using an interim manager

  • Firstly, an interim manager can help an organisation handle a critical leadership challenge in a professional and effective way. An interim manager often has experience of handling similar situations and can therefore quickly identify and resolve challenges. Interim management is a professional service that gives companies the opportunity to hire an experienced leader to cover a temporary leadership need. Interim managers are experienced leaders who specialise in taking over leadership roles for shorter periods, usually from six to twelve months. They can be a good solution for companies facing challenges such as changes in management, growth, restructuring or other critical situations.

  • Secondly, an interim manager can help an organisation introduce a new perspective and new ideas. Interim managers often have experience from several organisations and can therefore bring valuable knowledge and experience from other industries and organisations. They have often seen and handled similar challenges before, which means they can get to work on solving the problems quickly. Interim managers are also often more objective than permanently employed leaders, as they do not have a long personal history with the company. This can make it easier for them to take unpopular decisions or implement necessary changes.

  • Thirdly, an interim manager can help strengthen an organisation's internal leadership team. An interim manager can act as a mentor or coach for permanently employed leaders and help develop their leadership skills.

  • Interim managers can also be a good solution for companies that do not have the capacity or expertise to cover a leadership need internally. Take, for example, a company that is growing rapidly and needs more leaders but does not have sufficient recruitment capacity or time to hire more permanent leaders. In such cases, an interim manager can be a good way to cover the temporary leadership need while the company continues to recruit permanent staff.

There are also some challenges in using an interim manager

  • Firstly, it can be challenging to find an interim manager with the right expertise and experience for a given situation. It is important to make sure that an interim manager has the right expertise and experience to handle a given challenge. In addition to a large database of qualified interim managers, we use the latest in AI and executive search methodology to find the right candidate.

  • Secondly, it can be challenging to integrate an interim manager into an organisation's internal leadership team. It is important to make sure that an interim manager receives the necessary support and follow-up to be able to do their work effectively. As the client, you must give the interim manager a clear mandate, and this must be communicated to the organisation.
