What you need to know about interim management and Management for Hire

Interim management is big in Europe, and in our nearest neighbour, Sweden, it is very common to hire an interim manager, but here in Norway we are lagging a little behind. Suddenly you find yourself needing leadership expertise fast. So I thought I would share the most important things you need to know about interim management, so that you are ready when the need arises. The name Interim manager, Management for Hire, stand-in manager – it goes by many names. What they all have in common is that a business that needs a temporary leader hires one from a professional interim company. When should we use an interim manager? Interim management can be used in many different contexts, particularly if you need to get an interim manager in place quickly. It may be that a manager is going on parental leave, or that a manager has suddenly fallen ill. It may also be that a senior executive has to be replaced quickly, or that you are in a recruitment process that is taking a long time – and when you have finally found a suitable candidate, he or she has a six-month notice period. It is also common to use an interim manager for a turnaround, to clean things up or to carry out a major change process. The same applies if you are building up a new area or department: using an interim manager for a new venture is very common, and day-to-day operations usually take over once it is up and running. What does it cost to hire an interim manager? Is interim management expensive? That is a question we are often asked. It naturally depends on the nature, length and scope of the assignment. You pay a pre-agreed price, usually per day the interim manager works. There are no surprises, and all obligations and additional costs beyond ordinary salary – such as holiday pay, employer's social security contributions, insurance and pension – are included. There are no hidden costs. Does it take long to find an interim manager? We have a very good track record of finding capable interim managers quickly. With 18 years' experience in senior management within recruitment, a large database of capable and experienced interim managers, first-hand experience of executive search methods and a broad network, we aim to be the fastest interim company in the industry. We present relevant, qualified candidates to you 2–4 days after you have signed an agreement with us. How long can we hire an interim manager for? You can hire an interim manager for as long as you need. An interim assignment usually starts with 6–9 months before it is extended. A typical hire period for an interim manager is often 12–18 months, but this depends entirely on your needs. Interim managers are flexible and adapt, and the agreed period can be both shortened and extended should your needs change.

Is there a difference between a consultant and an interim manager?
Interim management, Management for Hire and management consultant are terms that are used somewhat interchangeably, but there are significant differences. An interim manager is a highly experienced leader who can start quickly, is operational in the day-to-day running of the business and creates value from day one. A consultant is an adviser within a narrow specialist field, e.g. IT; consultants are often brought in for a defined period and work on analyses and process proposals, and they are usually not operational in the day-to-day running of the business.
