Welcome to our interview series presenting our accomplished board candidates.

These interviews give you a unique opportunity to get to know our accomplished board candidates, who are ready to bring their expertise and insight to the boardroom.

We have access to Norway’s most comprehensive database of board candidates and from it we have handpicked a selection of experienced leaders with a broad range of backgrounds and expertise. They represent a diversity of perspectives, and all share an understanding of how important good governance is to achieving strategic and operational goals.

Through these interviews you will gain insight into what motivates them, how they view board work and, not least, the personal qualities and skills they can offer. We hope this will give a fuller picture of each candidate and inspire engagement and discussion about the role of the board in modern business leadership.

This time we talk to board candidate Irene Kinunda Afriyie

Irene is a debut author with a broad background in civic engagement and culture. In her day job she works as community liaison at Fargespill, she contributes her insight as a guest commentator in Bergens Tidende and she is a columnist for Subjekt. Her experience also extends to leadership and board roles; she is board chair of both Fana Folkehøyskole and Puff Stiftelsen, and a board member of Grieghallen AS, BIT Teatergarasjen and Unity Spark.

Kinunda Afriyie has a passion for board work, and to contribute effectively she has taken part in the board programme at NHH to further sharpen her skills in this role.

What motivates you to serve on a board?

I want to have a positive influence on the society I live in. Being on a board gives me the opportunity to contribute to development and to choose a direction that benefits both the company and society.

What do you think are the most important qualities of a good board candidate?

It is very important that a board candidate has a thorough understanding of the company’s vision, goals and, not least, market conditions. A board candidate should not only be goal-oriented and strategic, but also able to anticipate and adapt to change in an ever-shifting business landscape.  I would also say that another important quality is the ability to work well as part of a team and to communicate effectively with other board members and the management.

What is your philosophy on board work?

I see myself as the management’s critical best friend, and my mantra is to be a positive influence.

How would you like people to describe you after a board meeting?

As solution-oriented and as someone who brings different perspectives.

What is the most valuable lesson you have taken from your previous board experience?

Who sits on a board has a major impact on the organisational culture, as well as on which articles of association are adopted. The most recent thing I have learned is that everyone has blind spots. That is why a diversity of expertise and experience in meetings is important, so that we can help each other see what others might not.

What do you hope to contribute as a board member?

I have the experience and expertise needed to make a significant contribution to the work of a board.

As a board member, I hope to contribute a combination of strategic thinking and ethical leadership. I want to bring perspectives and ideas that can support the company’s growth and development in the long term.
