What is interim management?

Written by Agile Gruppen | Apr 27, 2022, 1:44:06 PM

Interim management, or management for hire, means that a temporary leader joins the business and is operational from day one.
The interim manager handles the day-to-day tasks and becomes part of the management team.

If your leader leaves suddenly and unexpectedly as a result of long-term sick leave, restructuring, strategic decisions or other changes, we will find you a new leader within a short time.

Our pool includes all types of interim managers, so we can always find a skilled leader who will take responsibility for developing your business in the right strategic direction – for as long as you need. Our clients are typically facing a transformation, a change of ownership, the build-up of new systems or a major project, or they need an interim manager with operational experience or special professional qualifications.

Need leadership expertise for a limited period?

An urgent need for an interim manager can arise for a variety of reasons. Illness, leave, transformation, strategic changes and other kinds of change happen all the time.

Agile Interim specialises in finding leaders who can step into a leadership role quickly for a defined period. Sometimes this means a leader is to be replaced; at other times, the person will return. It takes time to replace a leader and find the right person with the right expertise. Perhaps you want to think it over before you make your choice. Agile Interim can help you find an experienced interim manager for the period until the new leader is in place. We have long experience of recruiting and searching for leaders, and we deliver a fast, cost-effective and quality-assured process.

When do you need an interim manager?

Leave or sickness absence

Illness affects leaders too. Long-term absence due to illness or leave may require a leader to give up their leadership responsibilities for a period. An interim manager can step in and take over that responsibility until the person returns to work. An arrangement like this ensures that the business’s day-to-day operations can continue as before.

Transformation

If a business is facing a transformation, it may need an interim manager with the expertise to take responsibility for carrying out the process, whether it involves a strategic change or scaling the business up or down. Identifying challenges and implementing measures on the way towards new goals is a special skill that, in many cases, the business only needs for a period.

Project management

When a project is to be carried out, extra resources are required for a period. Often there is no need for a permanent hire. Instead, you need a temporary project manager who can contribute their experience and expertise to that particular project. That is where interim management is a good solution.

Exit/sale of the business

Are you planning to sell the business? Preparing a business for a sale, merger or other transaction is something quite different from day-to-day operations. And good management of the process can make a big difference, both financially and for the employees. That is when you may need an interim manager who has experience of preparing a company for the next step and knows the process.

How to hire an interim manager:

A quality-assured process:

Description of the assignment

The first step in the process is to send us an email or contact one of our advisers directly. Once we have received your enquiry, we arrange a start-up meeting with one of our advisers. As the client, you describe the assignment and what you need help with. Together, we draw up a description of the type of leader we will look for and a timeline for the process, and we sign a start-up agreement. We tailor every search to your needs.

Many clients ask several companies for candidates at the same time. We do not sell CVs; we hire out leaders who have been through screening and evaluation with us.

Shortlisting and interviewing candidates

When we search for interim managers, our candidate pool is important. But we also search for good interim managers in the wider market and through our sister companies that work with permanent positions.

Interim management is about timing.

Interim managers with the right expertise and personal profile need to be available to you exactly when you need them. We present you with qualified, relevant candidates very quickly. This requires us to work in parallel with our candidates and clients at all times. By the time the client calls, we have already interviewed and evaluated a number of candidates across various fields.

An interview process, reference checks and the necessary background checks are carried out before it is decided who will take on the role.

Contract signing and onboarding

Once the right candidate has been selected, we sign a contract with the client and the candidate. Our advisers help with onboarding the interim manager and provide continuous follow-up of the candidate throughout the assignment. All parties should feel well looked after during the process.

If you as a client have any questions along the way, our advisers are available for a chat. They support you as the client and are available to answer questions from the interim manager along the way.

But what if it turns out that the interim manager is not working out in the assignment?

Then we will find you a new one at no cost. That is part of our guarantee scheme.
